OUR small and beautiful Island boasts a formidable array of festivals throughout the year and the annual Celebrating Age Festival, hosted by Age UK IW’s Age Friendly Island Programme is perhaps one of the most significant. The festival, now in its third year, sets out to celebrate Inernational Older Persons Day, with a month-long offering of events, activities and workshops across the Island, commencing Monday, October 1.
The Age Friendly Island team is being supported by a record number of partner organisations and charities to provide the largest programme of events the festival has ever seen. Activities aim to bring older people together and range from awareness events and workshops, coffee mornings, walks, dancing, drop-in health clinics, get-togethers at the pub and even a cruise on TheSolent.
Last year’s festivities were very well received with some lovely feedback. A firm festival favourite is the annual Celebrating Age Awards ceremony; on Thursday, October 4, at the Lakeside Park Hotel, in Wootton Bridge. It is an opportunity to celebrate the amazing contribution made by older people on the Island, with eight individual categories, including Age Friendly Entrepreneur and Age Friendly Challenge of the Year.
Helen Lewis, Age Friendly Island’s engagement officer, said: “I am really looking forward to running such a vibrant festival this year. With support from such a diverse range of organisations, there are more than 50 events to choose from, so please get involved.”
A full programme of events is available on the Age Friendly Island website (www.agefriendlyisland.org) or a copy can be requested by phone (525282) or by e-mail (email@example.com) Additional events can be found on the Isle Find It website: www.islefindit.org.uk, under the events section.
‘We’ve had such a lovely afternoon, it’s been fantastic, we loved all of the songs and we make a pretty nice sound when we all sing together/ It’s been so nice to be smiling and laughing all afternoon.‘ – feedback from an attendee of last year’s SingAbout session, run by Independent Arts.
